Where are the ideal places to hide during a zombie apocalypse? — Part Two

It pays to be prepared for any situation, including a zombie apocalypse. There are many different kinds of zombies that have been theorised to might exist in such an event, so it’s a good idea to consider more than one possible safe location to live. Here are five more places that might be ideal to hide in during a zombie apocalypse.

1. A lighthouse

Lighthouses are usually very isolated and sometimes separated from the mainland. This means running into a zombie horde should be pretty rare.

However, in the unfortunate case that a zombie horde does stumble upon your retreat, the high vantage point that a lighthouse provides will ensure that you’ll spot them approaching in time to prepare a defensive strategy.

If the hungry undead manages to get inside the lighthouse, they’ll likely be slowed down by the long, winding staircase to the top of the lighthouse where you are (it’s quite difficult climbing stairs when your legs are decaying, I assume). This allows you to pick them off before they even get near you.

The downside is that lighthouses are usually located within an inhospitable environment that isn’t suitable for collecting rainwater nor growing food. Even if they were, I personally don’t fancy walking up and down those stairs every day.

2. A prison

Although prisons are designed to stop things from getting out, they’re also surprisingly good at stopping things getting in as well.

A typical prison is surrounded by a fence, a wall and several guard towers. This makes it a very strong, defensible location.

Although it would be very difficult for them to do so, if the zombies do somehow manage to find their way into the prison, there are a series of lockable doors inside the building itself to slow or stop the horde from munching on you. Maximum security prisons may even come with a fully stocked armoury.

The issue, however, is that you’ll probably be sharing the space with some of society’s worst criminals. Chances are that the guards will have all abandoned their posts to get home to their families, leaving the inmates to occupy the prison for themselves.

3. An offshore platform

If you could somehow manage to get yourself on an offshore oil drilling platform, these large structures, surrounded by water, would be pretty impossible for the undead to infiltrate.

Though impenetrable to zombies, oil drilling platforms host an array of issues for humans on board. First of all the supplies are very limited, meaning you’ll have to travel to shore frequently for more. There is no fertile soil to grow crops. And let’s not forget the fact that it’s sitting on top of a massive amount of highly flammable crude oil, just waiting for that one spark to send you shooting off towards the moon.

Unique to the United Kingdom are sea-based fortifications called Maunsell Forts. These were built during World War Two for the purpose of detecting and inflicting heavy damage on German bombers under the cover of darkness before they reached mainland Britain, where they were finished off by the legendary Spitfires.

Similarly to offshore oil platforms, these naval forts would also be impossible for zombies to infiltrate. However, the same issues relating to the lack of supplies are also present.

4. A bank vault

Bank vaults are, supposedly, some of the most secure places on the planet. Surrounded by thick concrete and a huge, metal door, there’s no way a zombie will be able to break in and decide to have you for dinner.

But then again, as secure as a bank vault might be, it probably has more disadvantages than advantages.

First of all, there’s no way to see what’s on the other side of the door without opening it. Second of all, supplies will eventually run out and you’ll need to venture out of the vault for more. Banks are usually situated in populated areas, which would mean high concentrations of the undead. Lastly, there’s no toilet in a bank vault, yeesh.

5. An island

If you are able to acquire a boat, you could settle on an island during the zombie apocalypse.

You should be able to pack plenty of supplies to last until you are able to develop a sustainable homestead on the island. After you have ensured there is no zombie presence on the island.

An island would be relatively safe from zombies, other than the occasional floater who washes up on the shores, which is nothing a few well-placed traps or a sturdy fence can’t handle. Another threat is other humans approaching the island — who knows if one of them is infected?

Or, why not combine two of the things on this list — an island prison? Alcatraz is probably the most famous, but there are others too, most of them abandoned and ripe for the picking.

And there you have it, five more places that might be safe to hide in during a zombie apocalypse. Stay safe folks. And remember, brains are for thinking, not for feeding zombies.
